(Alan Heitz / Los Angeles Times handout) http://herocomplex.latimes.com/2012/05/19/zack-snyder-romero-fans-are-scarier-than-watchmen-fans/img_3204/ 5 Link Zack Snyder, the director of the upcoming “Man of Steel,” remained tight-lipped about the 2013 Superman film, despite persistent teasing from “The Walking Dead” creator Robert Kirkman during a Q&A Friday night at the Hero Complex Film Festival. The Q&A — at L.A. Live in downtown Los Angeles — followed a screening of Snyder’s 2004 remake of “Dawn of the Dead” during a zombie-themed opening night, which also included a highlights reel of “The Walking Dead” Season 2, a screening of “Shaun of the Dead” and a Q&A with Edgar Wright and Simon Pegg. “I’m only here to ask him about the Superman movie,” Kirkman joked when he was introduced to the festival audience. But Snyder would only say he is in the editing process for the film. “It’s going really good, actually. I’m just cutting right now,” Snyder said. “I’m really excited about it. It’s fun to work on. It’s gigantic and crazy.” Snyder also talked about the criticism he received from Alan Moore and “Watchmen” fans after he directed the big-screen adaptation of the classic graphic novel, but said the “Watchmen” camp wasn’t as intense as the George Romero fans when he was remaking “Dawn of the Dead.” “Zombie fans [were more strident], for sure. One hundred percent sure,” he said. “I feel like the ‘Watchmen’ fans, you can reason with them, you know. When they have you in an alley, you can talk your way kind of out of there. But zombie fans are certainly much more — especially before the movie came out, and we were just talking about what the movie would be, and how we would remake ‘Dawn of the Dead,’ it was pretty intense.” Both Snyder and Kirkman cited Romero among their influences, with Snyder also mentioning “The Thing” and “The Shining.” Kirkman, however, said his introduction to horror came late. “Horror-wise, I actually was not allowed to watch horror films for a really long time, which I think is why I’m such a sissy,” Kirkman said. “I was actually allowed to rent a horror movie, like every year on Halloween, and that was the only time I was ever allowed to watch a horror movie. So every year, I either got ‘Hellraiser’ or ‘Hellraiser 2.’” Kirkman also talked about the evolution of “The Walking Dead” television series, which is based on his comic series of the same name. Now, Kirkman writes for the show as well as the comic. “I have a really hard-and-fast rule to try and make sure that the comic doesn’t change because of the show, because I feel like the comic existed for a long time before the show, and I would be doing a disservice to myself if I changed the way I did anything,” Kirkman said. “I think I’m getting better as a writer for working on the show, because I’m learning a lot of stuff that I should have known a long time ago. I’m constantly in the writers’ room. … Hopefully because of that, it’s making the comic a little better.” “A lot of people think that I’m like, ‘Ah yeah, cut that guy’s head off, that’s gonna be awesome. Kill some more babies!’” Kirkman said. “But every now and then I’m writing a scene and I tear up because I’m killing somebody I’ve been writing for 30 issues, or something bad’s happening.” The festival continues Saturday with screenings of “Robocop,” “A Clockwork Orange” and “Super,” as well as Q&A’s with Peter Weller, Malcolm McDowell and Rainn Wilson. – Noelene Clark RECENT AND RELATED HCFF: McDowell and ‘Clockwork’ on May 19 HCFF: Zombie!: Zack Snyder, Robert Kirkman HCFF: Rainn Wilson unmasks ‘Super’” HCFF: Pixar Sunday: ‘Wall-E,’ ‘Brave’ preview HCFF: Robocop, reloaded for 25th anniversary HCFF: An Evening with Stan Lee, May 21 HCFF: Jim Lee unveils Film Festival poster Whedon fills ‘Avengers’ with heroes, humor Ridley Scott: ‘Magic comes over the horizon…” ‘Prometheus’: Ridley Scott revisits canvas ‘Spider-Man’: Denis Leary dazzled by Emma Stone

" Where can you buy eclipse sunglasses? It's hard to find, but there is a sure place to find them in Los Angeles -- Griffith Observatory. The city-owned observatory in the Hollywood Hills is selling eclipse sunglasses for $2.99 a pair, and has plenty of them, said its spokeswoman Susan Szotyori. Griffith Observatory is open Saturday from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m., and on Sunday opens at 10 a.m. and will be open through the partial solar eclipse Sunday evening, which begins at 5:24 p.m. and reaches its maximum shadow at 6:38 p.m. Best place to watch eclipse? The observatory was determined to have a plentiful supply, Szotyori said, because officials there want to make sure everyone who comes to the observatory Sunday can view the eclipse safely. Looking directly at the sun can cause permanent vision loss, and most who do suffer blindness following eclipses are children and young adults, NASA says. Regular sunglasses won't do the trick. Eclipse sunglasses, as you might imagine, are not really in demand most of the time, so it's hard to know where to find them. And, at least elsewhere, they were hard to keep in stock as eclipse frenzy took hold this week. In Redding, Calif., which will enjoy a full "ring of fire" eclipse if the clouds stay away, stores reported quickly selling out of eclipse glasses earlier in the week but had more orders on the way, the Record-Searchlight newspaper reported. So-called "No. 14" welder's glass -- which can also be used to look directly at the sun -- and special camera filters for solar eclipses were also difficult to find, the newspaper reported. In Reno, Nev., the Fleischmann Planetarium and Science Center sold out of 17,000 pairs of glasses earlier in the week, the Reno Gazette-Journal reported Thursday, and had to ordered an additional 10,000 pairs. The Griffith Observatory will be also selling "Solarama" devices that will project an image of the eclipse on a surface for $9.99. Officials said to make sure to buy the glasses from a reputable dealer, and beware of fakes. The glasses also must not be damaged or scratched. NASA has issued strict warnings against looking at the sun during an eclipse without proper equipment. "Most individuals who sustain eclipse-related eye injuries are children and young adults," a NASA report said. The problem is that intense visible light can cause damage to cells in the eye, and can destroy them, according to NASA, and can cause temporary or permanent vision loss. "When a person looks repeatedly or for a long time at the Sun without proper protection for the eyes, this photochemical retinal damage may be accompanied by a thermal injury - the high level of visible and near-infrared radiation causes heating that literally cooks the exposed tissue," NASA says. "The danger to vision is significant because ... retinal injuries occur without any feeling of pain (there are no pain receptors in the retina), and the visual effects do not occur for at least several hours after the damage is done," the agency said. "Even when 99% of the Sun's surface ... is obscured during the partial phases of a solar eclipse, the remaining crescent Sun is still intense enough to cause a retinal burn." And by the way -- don't throw your eclipse glasses away. Another rare cosmic sight will occur soon -- Venus move between the Earth and the Sun on June 5, and we will able to see a dark dot float across the surface of the sun. It will be the last such occurrence in our lifetime, says transitofvenus.org . You can still enjoy the eclipse for free, wherever you are. The simplest way
